The Department of Laser and Optoelectronics Engineering awarded a master’s degree to the student (Tabarak Mohammed Mahmoud) majoring in Optoelectronics Engineering for her thesis entitled: “Improving the Antimicrobial Activity of Drug Loaded Silver Nanoparticles Prepared by Laser Ablation”
On Tuesday, 4/3/2025, in this thesis, silver nanoparticles prepared by laser ablation were loaded with the antibiotic gentamicin, improving their antibacterial efficacy through a dual mechanism that targets bacteria and reduces their resistance to conventional drugs. In addition, silver nanoparticles have been combined by laser ablation with cisplatin chemotherapy, a drug used to treat lung cancer, to enhance its therapeutic effect. Silver nanoparticles help increase the uptake of cisplatin inside cancer cells, improving its efficacy and minimizing its side effects. This strategy shows great potential in developing more efficient therapies to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria and treat cancerous tumors, making the laser ablation technique an innovative approach in nanomedicine.
The discussion committee consisted of Prof. Dr. Abdulhadi Kazim Jadran as the chair, and the membership and supervision of Prof. Dr. Karim Hussain Jawad, and the membership of Prof. Dr. Ali Abdulkhaleq Abdulhadi, Prof. Dr. Sabah Saad Abdulsaheb, and Prof. Dr. Ali Abdulkhaleq Abdulhadi.
