The Graduate Follow-Up Unit in the Department of Laser and Optoelectronics Engineering conducted an online workshop titled “Ethics of Scientific Research Publishing” at 8:00 PM on Saturday, July 20, 2024, via the Google Meet platform. The workshop was delivered by the unit’s head, Dr. Taif Aied Faisal .The workshop discussed scientific research, methods of publication, and scientific journals, as well as the structure of preparing scientific research, including organizing ideas, obtaining funding, writing, evaluating, and publishing research, along with post-publication metrics.
A significant focus of the workshop was on the ethics of scientific publishing, emphasizing issues such as:
- Avoiding simultaneous submission of the same research to multiple journals.
- Fabrication of data and falsification of research results.
- Image manipulation.
- Violations of intellectual property rights.
- Proper acknowledgment of authorship.
- Unauthorized use of data.
- Failure to obtain consent from human subjects for publishing results.
- Legal consequences of ethical breaches in scientific research.
The workshop introduced platforms like COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) and Retraction Watch, presenting case studies of retracted scientific papers due to violations of ethical publishing guidelines.
A video on publishing ethics was also shown, followed by a Q&A session where participants’ inquiries were addressed, providing valuable insights for all attendees.
