Department History

Department History

The University of Technology has a decade of producing very good students in field of Laser and Optoelectronics Engineering. The first connection of the college to Al-Rasheed College for Sciences and Engineering is back to the very ending dates of 1990’s. Since 2003, Al-Rasheed College for Sciences and Engineering was connected to the University of Technology and thereafter, by a proposal from the dean of Al-Rasheed University, the department of Laser and Optoelectronics Engineering was established in 2004. Since 2004, a number of changes in the department location were implemented. The department was initially housed in the cancelled department of technological education and then moved to the extension section of mechanical engineering just before moving to its current location in the university campus.

The college offers two tracks, laser and optoelectronics engineering programs which they are offering new bachelor degrees in the emerging areas of laser and optoelectronics. The department was established to involve and prepare well-practiced and trained engineers in the field of specialization to have the capability of spreading this new science and its related technologies in Iraq, and to enhance the plan of ministry of the Higher Education and Scientific Researches that would try to raise the level of education at the Iraqi universities. At the first year of the four-year study, the program of optoelectronics engineering consists of a common core courses designed to give students a solid foundation and the basic skills needed to develop their needs for the following years. After that, student will be engaged into two years of intensive specialized courses where students engaged in a mode of studying covering different aspects of optoelectronics engineering including laser technologies; optoelectronic devices; semiconductors; photonics devices; sensing and imaging; optical fiber technologies and communications etc. These technologies have applications in industry and manufacturing communication, biology, medicine, energy, lighting and commercially aspects of TV manufacturing and other applications for security in civil and defense purposes.
